Joan of Arc, a peasant girl from Domremy, said she was guided by saints’ voices to help the French in the Hundred Years’ War. In 1429 she helped lift the siege of Orleans and saw Charles VII crowned at Reims. She was captured, tried and burned at Rouen in 1431, aged about 19. She was cleared in 1456, made a saint in 1920 and became a national symbol of France; the Cross of Lorraine linked to her later became the emblem of the Free French in WWII.
