1953 was the year of Elizabeth II’s coronation and the first year of her coinage. The portrait is by the sculptor Mary Gillick. The portcullis was a Tudor badge and is the symbol of the Houses of Parliament. The brass threepenny bit was used until decimalisation in 1971.
