Thor, the Norse god of thunder, protected gods and people with his hammer Mjolnir. Small hammer amulets were worn across the Viking world in the 10th and 11th centuries, partly as a pagan answer to the Christian cross. The stylised eyes and knotwork copy the decoration of hammer amulets found in Scandinavia.
