Probus was a soldier-emperor who drove Germanic invaders out of Gaul and restored the frontiers during a time of crisis. The reverse shows Jupiter handing him the globe, a sign that the gods gave him power over the world, and the legend praises the ‘clemency of the times’. He was killed by his own troops in 282.

KM-111-Gold-SS Emperor Probus Clementia Temporum in Silver Bezel
$14.50
Gold overlay casting pendant. Obverse: radiate cuirassed bust facing right, IMP C M AVR PROBVS AVG. Reverse: CLEMENTIA TEMP, the emperor standing and receiving a globe from Jupiter, who holds a sceptre; XXI-type mint mark below. This version is a gold overlay casting set in a hand-formed sterling silver bezel. Inscriptions explained: IMP C M AVR PROBVS AVG is short for ‘Imperator Caesar Marcus Aurelius Probus Augustus’, ‘Emperor Caesar Marcus Aurelius Probus, the Augustus’ (Probus, emperor AD 276-282). CLEMENTIA TEMP is short for ‘Clementia Temporum’, ‘the mildness (peace) of the times’. XXI marks coins of a set standard, usually read as 20 parts bronze to 1 part silver (the exact meaning is debated).
