Alexander III of Macedon (356-323 BC) became king at 20 and in about twelve years built an empire from Greece to Egypt and the borders of India. After his death his generals, who divided the empire, put his portrait on their coins to claim his legacy. The English legend shows this is a modern souvenir medal inspired by those coins. The chariot scene recalls the chariot racing that Macedonian kings, including Alexander’s father Philip II, celebrated on their coinage.
